Experience wildlife in Pennsylvania, right outside your door. Tucked into the mountains of Sullivan County, Huckleberry Hollow Farm sits in the middle of a thriving ecosystem where wildlife isn’t just something you hope to see—it’s a part of everyday life here.
Surrounded by state game lands, forests, and open fields, our property offers a front-row seat to the beauty of nature. Every hour, every day, and every changing season brings exciting new sights.
Take a look at some of the incredible wildlife you might spot during your stay.
Deer, Bears, and Larger Wildlife
Gaze out the windows of our Farmhouse at sunrise or dusk, and you’re likely to catch a scene straight out of a painting: a herd of elegant white-tailed deer calmly grazing through the fields.
Black bears are part of the region as well. While they tend to keep their distance, sightings do happen, particularly in warmer months when food is abundant. Seeing a bear (or even a cub) in its natural environment is a memory you’ll never forget.
Coyotes and foxes are also active in the area. You may spot them crossing open ground, but more often, you’ll hear the coyote’s eerie (yet enchanting) howl at night, an experience that adds to the feeling of being fully immersed in the outdoors.
Did you know there are over 480 species of wild mammals and birds in Pennsylvania? The Pennsylvania Game Commission provides information on native wildlife species, habitats, and conservation efforts across the state.
Birds, Sky, and the Sounds of the Forest
If you’re near The River Cottage, look to the sky, and you just might catch a glimpse of a bald eagle soaring overhead. It’s a moment straight from a nature documentary, and you have a chance to live it!
It’s not just what you see. It’s what you hear, too. In the mornings, the forest is alive with the sweet chirps of songbirds. In the evenings, owls take over, and the soundscape becomes slower and more atmospheric. The perfect environment to nestle up with a blanket and a book.
Don’t forget the wild turkeys. These charming birds are commonly spotted in the area, moving in groups. Listen for their famous “gobble” as they waddle around.
Raccoons, Rabbits, and Smaller Wildlife
Even when you’re not actively looking, something is always happening. Some of the most frequent wildlife sightings are the smallest ones.
Raccoons, rabbits, groundhogs, and chipmunks are everywhere. You’ll notice movement in the brush, activity along the edges of the woods, and glimpses of these furry friends, making the entire environment feel active at all hours of the day.
Creek Life, Trout, and the Ecosystem Around You
Lopez Creek and Loyalsock Creek run through the valley, adding another layer to the experience. This area is known for trout fishing, especially during spring and fall, making it a draw for anglers.
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission offers updates on trout stocking schedules, fishing regulations, and creek conditions.
Even if you’re not interested in fishing, the flowing water brings frogs, salamanders, and other small species that thrive here. Look closely, and maybe you’ll see frogs splashing along the water’s edge.
What Wildlife Looks Like Across the Seasons
One of the things that makes a wildlife vacation unique at Huckleberry Hollow is how much the property changes throughout the year. No two visits feel the same:
- Spring brings new life, which means baby animal time! Watch for fawns following close behind their mothers, newly hatched birds, and increased movement as animals wake from winter slumbers.
- Summer is lush and active, with deer in the early morning and evening, constant bird activity, and more activity near the creek from frogs and other small wildlife.
- Fall introduces cooler air, an array of colorful foliage, and heightened deer activity as they move more frequently across open fields and wooded edges.
- Winter quiets everything down, but fresh snow reveals tracks from deer, foxes, and other animals, giving you a different way to experience the wildlife around you.
A More Natural Way to Experience Wildlife
At most places, wildlife is something you have to drive out to see. Here, it’s part of the experience. Spend the day exploring nearby trails and state lands, or stay right on the property and let the environment come to you.
Whether it’s deer moving through the field, birds overhead, or the sounds of the forest in the early morning, the connection to nature is woven into everything. Book your stay at Huckleberry Hollow and slow down, step outside, and experience wildlife from the front row.
